Campsite France in Camargue at Vauvert

To the West of the Petit Rhone this medieval town was originally a small village of fishermen and salt workers, surrounded by marshes as far as the Mediterrannean sea.  Later in its history it was protected by 1640 m of ramparts with six prestigious towers, including the well known Tour Constance

The town of the “Dead Waters” has other attractions, for example its little harbour, linked to the sea by Le Grau du Roi and to Sête by the Canal du Rhone.  To the South of the town the vast areas of marshland are home to many exceptional and often protected species of wildlife, as well as the principal  product of the area: salt.

It is also the region with the highest level of evaporation and the lowest rainfall.
